The project is based on a novel by Geoff Nicholson of the same name, and the aim is to photograph every single street in London by October. Anyone can take part and I did, but set myself the challenge of photographing every street in the Square Mile of the City.

Nun Court is a very small alley just off Coleman Street, itself quite a long street which runs between London Wall down to Gresham Street. Nun Court is perhaps the street that I have walked past the most during this project, and have wondered many times how to get an interesting image. I finally got some inspiration one evening and was very pleased with the end result.<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/377/18536252134_e2bdbc3280_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/377/18536252134_e2bdbc3280_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The rest of the images here are in the area south of St. Paul's. Dean's Court, just off St. Paul's Churchyard, us another street I had been down a few times and struggled for inspiration. I think part of the reason is that it attracts a lot of smokers, who are not moving and just look on, wondering why on earth anyone would chose to photograph there. This time I managed to get an Ok image, and the smoker was too busy looking at his phone to notice me.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3903/19158802365_18b7e340ec_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3903/19158802365_18b7e340ec_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Dean's Court leads to Carter Lane and heading west you could easily miss a very small courtyard called Wardrobe Place. Previously I photographed and blogged about the nearby Wardrobe Terrace, and it is here at Wardrobe Place that the Edward III moved the royal finery in 1359, from the tower of London. For a place with such history I have certainly not done it justice.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/291/18538192483_23957800c2_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/291/18538192483_23957800c2_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A short way further along Carter Lane is St. Andrew's Hill.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/423/18536265094_c2b11f9302_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/423/18536265094_c2b11f9302_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Close by is Creed Lane and off here is a small lane and certainly not a square, called Ludgate Square. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/304/18538199743_975781d717_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/304/18538199743_975781d717_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This leads onto Ludgate Hill, and from hear I headed west a little. On the south side almost opposite Old Bailey is Pageantmaster Court.Its a short street, featuring only one building on either side so does not offer many photographic opportunities, but on this occasion I was blessed with some good light.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/419/18971112320_fec904db02_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/419/18971112320_fec904db02_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And that takes us up to the end of June, and with it an updated map.</div>

Now are up to June and there is probably not too many more posts to come.<br />
<br />
The next set of shots were taken on a couple of evenings after work. The first image, taken on Broken Wharf near the Thames and just off High Timber Street, is one that made me laugh when I saw the scene. Its a group of charity runners queuing for the toilets before the race, all with "Crisis", the name of the charity on their backs. I couldn't help thinking that it would be a real crisis if there was not toilet paper. Perhaps that is what the guy on the phone is ringing for.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/465/18477235176_5d39886488_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/465/18477235176_5d39886488_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Also just off High Timber Street is Stew Lane and Gardners Lane, neither of which presented many photo opportunities. Perhaps I was cheating a little with Stew Lane as it doesn't show the street as such but instead shows a ladder leading down to the river. I was on the lane when I took the image though, looking down over a wall at the very end of the lane.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/362/18499271262_6064ce2c55_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/362/18499271262_6064ce2c55_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8865/17880947804_e35c2344a8_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8865/17880947804_e35c2344a8_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
High Timber Street is a fork off Upper Thames Street and on the other side of Upper Thames Street is another fork, Castle Baynard Street. Castle Baynard Street doesn't really have a lot going for it - all of it is under a tunnel, which then comes out onto Puddle Dock.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8878/18499267832_156ce28538_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8878/18499267832_156ce28538_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Close by is a foot Bridge crossing Upper Thames Street which leads onto Fye Foot Lane, a pedestrian only lane which takes you to Queen Victoria Street. There is not a lot on this lane, jus the sides of some office buildings, but there some quite nice shadows were being cast.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8865/18499264642_e0f233d45f_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8865/18499264642_e0f233d45f_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Near to the first image of this entry is Trig Lane seen below. In the background is the Millennium (or Wobbly) Bridge and the Tate Modern art gallery.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/473/18317444989_e708b25801_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/473/18317444989_e708b25801_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
That was the last image I took on that evening, but a few days later I managed to get a few more images, which are all a bit spread out as I was filling in some gaps. Doby Court, is a very small yard outside an office and is not much to look at - you certainly wouldn't visit it unless you were mad enough to do a project like this. I struggled to know what to take, but then quite liked the combination of the bright red road side and the metal behind it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/294/18713589292_be850eecd9_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/294/18713589292_be850eecd9_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Watling Court, between Watling Street and Cannon Street, is another uninteresting street, which is currently blocked off at the Cannon Street end due to some building work. I did have a good chat with the lady on the left of the picture though, who was very interested in this project. If she looked at the blog she is probably wondering what happened to her picture as its so long since I took the shot.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/522/18530644868_df7b5eb9f7_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/522/18530644868_df7b5eb9f7_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Queen Street starts way up at a junction with Cheapside but leads all the down to Southwark bridge, first turning into Queen Street Place at the junction with Upper Thames Street. Here as you can see in these final images of Queen Street Place and Southwark Bridge, there were some lovely shadows being cast onto the street by the sun.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/260/18532372359_936f684451_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/260/18532372359_936f684451_z.jpg" /></a></div>

These images are from one particular evening after work, all of which are in the vicinity of St. Paul's. The first street I photographed was Friday Street, which is just off Cannon Street to he west of the Cathedral. It is a street that I had walked down a few times without being inspired enough to take a photo, but this time I got something.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5341/18005041845_76c539d401_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5341/18005041845_76c539d401_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Next was Addle Hill which is not very hilly and not very interesting either although at the end I found a sign stating "No waste to be left in this area at any time" beneath which there was a lot of "waste".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5465/17384524243_ec69c2bb63_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5465/17384524243_ec69c2bb63_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
From here there is the wonderfully named Wardrobe Terrace a small passageway that leads down to Queen Victoria Street. According to the <a href="https://londonist.com/2009/01/londonists_back_passage_51_wardrobe" target="_blank">londonist</a> the name does refer to a wardrobe - the "Great Wardrobe" was responsible for kings garments and moved to this spot in 1361. The passageway runs down side of the church "St. Andrew by the Wardrobe".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8783/18005051495_12e7264c87_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8783/18005051495_12e7264c87_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Close by and just off Cater Lane is Friar Street.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5343/17384532173_345acf3db2_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5343/17384532173_345acf3db2_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Back up towards St. Paul's and just off Ludgate Hill is Creed Lane. The following shot was taken outside a typical souvenir shot aimed at the tourists.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5343/17384536963_c7e89d5548_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5343/17384536963_c7e89d5548_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Almost opposite here is Stationers Hall Court, where the worshipful company of Stationers and newspaper makers are located. The shot below was taken in the alley of the same name that leads to the courtyard.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7795/17818789799_6cb179386f_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7795/17818789799_6cb179386f_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Next up is Warwick Passage, which leads connects Warwick Square (of Warwick Lane) to the Old Bailey and which goes right beneath the famous courts. I had previously come across this passage from the square but fond the gate locked. This time I came across the passage from the Old Bailey and entrance was not prohibited.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8822/17384541533_ff87f5bd4c_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8822/17384541533_ff87f5bd4c_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
My final shot of the evening was of Fleet Passage and taken along the side of the City Thameslink station.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5326/18005067695_f85dbbc01c_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5326/18005067695_f85dbbc01c_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
This was also the last image taken in May, so it 's time to show the updated map.<br />
<br />

<br />
This post features covers quite a wide area, but mostly between Monument and Mansion House tube stations and south of these to the river. We are going to jump around a bit though, due to fact that many areas have a few streets dotted around that I still need to photograph.<br />
<br />
First up are a couple of street just north near Monument Station. Talbot Court is notably only really for The ship pub, an proper old fashioned pub that existed before the great fire of London, but was destroyed and rebuilt after the fire.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7792/17455249909_1cab5be72d_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7792/17455249909_1cab5be72d_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Close by is St. Benet's Place a short alley with only a gym and some offices. I had walked past here many times wondering how to photograph it. I finally got a shot, but not a very good one.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5333/17453970110_25f935fb9c_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5333/17453970110_25f935fb9c_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Just east of West of Mansion House is Huggin Hill, a narrow alley running from Queen Victoria Street down to Upper Thames Street. A large portion of it was under cover due to construction work, which limited options somewhat.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5455/17389250320_c871488026_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5455/17389250320_c871488026_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
A bit further along Queen Victoria Street is Lambeth Hill which snakes down towards Castle Baynard Stretet and Upper Thames Street. This shot was taken from a footbridge looking down onto the bottom of the "hill".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5447/17389052688_fd024a41f1_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5447/17389052688_fd024a41f1_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Jumping back over the other side of Cannon Street station now and in between Cannon Street and Upper Thames Street - Laurence Pountney Hill.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5332/17639153032_50df0a589f_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5332/17639153032_50df0a589f_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Close by and also off Cannon Street is Bush Lane of which there isn't really much to say or photograph.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8795/17641581605_bdabfc0b1b_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8795/17641581605_bdabfc0b1b_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The other (west) side of Cannon Street now, and to Cloak Lane. This street is named after the Latin word 'cloaca' which basically means sewer or drain, so I will leave it for you to imagine what this street may have been like in days gone by.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Runing down the side of Mansion House Station is Garlick Hill. At the bottom of Garlick Hill is <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_James_Garlickhythe" target="_blank">St. James Garlickhythe</a> church. As stated in that link, the word Garlickhythe refers to a landing place or "hythe" near where garlic was sold in medieval times. Fascinating. The shot below was taken at the top of the hill at the entrance to the tube station.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7684/17455272589_18c9a0198a_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7684/17455272589_18c9a0198a_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Crossing upper Thames street now towards the river is Allhallows Lane, another street that I had been down several times but was lacking in any inspiration. there is not a lot down here really, but of notee is a bar called the The Loose Cannon which is in a grade 2 listed building below the Cannon Bridge.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8861/17203098823_196f50c4ba_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8861/17203098823_196f50c4ba_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Walking along the river and under Cannon Street, the Thames footpath turns into Walbrook Wharf. The wharf is operational and freight is loaded onto barges here, at which times this section of the footpath is closed whilst the freight is carried over the pathway.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8899/17200972784_2d4e32df21_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8899/17200972784_2d4e32df21_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I have commented in a previous blog post about how the Thames footpath changes name frequently and rather annoying. Just along from here it turns into Three Cranes Walk. The picture below is the underside of Southwark Bridge.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8854/17635669488_d0b9dba54c_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8854/17635669488_d0b9dba54c_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
On the other side of the bridge the footpath changes name again, this time to Three Barrels Walk.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5452/17823966151_b98f29b190_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5452/17823966151_b98f29b190_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The footpath then turns away from the river, but changes name again to Queenhithe. Queenhithe is small and very old ward of the city, the name of which derives from the "Queen's' Dock". The dock in question still exists but is no longer in use, but has been designated a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scheduled_monument" target="_blank">Scheduled Ancient Monument</a>. Running along the path is a 30m long mosaic which depicts the history and people that built and lived in the area. Part of the mosiac can be seen in the final image of this post below.<br />
<br />

I have a few streets left around the St. Paul's area to start off with. First up is Panyer Alley. This shot was taken standing on Panyer Alley, but probably really shows Paternoster Row. Something interesting on Panyer Alley that I didn't spot though is a stone carving of a boy on a panyer, which is a bread basket. For some more information head over to <a href="http://www.uncoveringlondon.co.uk/panyer-boy.htm" target="_blank">Uncovering London</a> and <a href="http://hidden-london.com/the-guide/panyer-boy/" target="_blank">Hidden London</a><div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8882/17500328011_44a94116fa_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8882/17500328011_44a94116fa_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
At the other side of Paternoster Square is Rose Street and this shot was taken from the end where it meets Newgate Street.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5467/17500566665_a7673ffb22_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5467/17500566665_a7673ffb22_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Just off Rose Street is White Hart Street, which does not have a lot of interest. The best I could do was to frame these two black vents (?) and wait for someone to walk past in the right position.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5465/17312986350_43aa1f5a1d_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5465/17312986350_43aa1f5a1d_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now to the southern side of the Cathedral, and to someone else advertising the same fish and chip restaurant as featured in a previous blog. This time it is a different but equally bored person (wouldn't you be ? ) on a different street, this time Godliman Street.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5442/17498470262_c82eb236b4_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5442/17498470262_c82eb236b4_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>
A bit further along St. Paul's Churchyard and on the southern side is Old Change Court. There is not much here really other than a cocktail bar, but I manged to get a shot I was happy with.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5442/17314293739_98404d084f_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5442/17314293739_98404d084f_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Carter Lane adjoins Old Change Court and runs Parallel to St. Paul's Churchyard to the Blackfriars area. Running between Carter Street an Knightrider Street is an unusual alley called New Bell Yard. Its at the back of the (five star) Grange St. Paul's hotel and there is an entrance to the hotel, where they have some outside seating. The alley is not much longer than what can be seen in the image, so quite a bit of it is taken up by the hotel.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8760/17312823738_25f930ca54_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8760/17312823738_25f930ca54_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Lastly I am heading off somewhere completely different - to Hayne Street near Smithfield's market. Since I started this project there has been a building site next to this narrow alley with boards on one side and just a hairdressers on the other. Many times I have walked by looking for inspiration, and I didn't find any this time either, but came away with a usable image, of sorts.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8766/17389244370_53fbe3c10d_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8766/17389244370_53fbe3c10d_z.jpg" /></a></div>

St. Paul's Cathedral is the most famous, and one of the most famous in the world. No one needs me a photo from me to know what it looks like, so I haven't taken one. But I do have images of all the surrounding streets.<br />
<br />
The following two images are on an unmarked lane/street just off Paternoster square, so I assume it to be part of the square. Having photographed the square a couple of months ago I could have simply moved onto the next street, but you can see why I didn't. The two sculptures are actually air conditioning <a href="http://www.heatherwick.com/paternoster-vents/" target="_blank">cooling vents</a>, and amazing ones at that.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7669/17279699792_3025167ac4_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7669/17279699792_3025167ac4_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8722/17280998721_4ceccf181a_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8722/17280998721_4ceccf181a_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
And then I took another image of the sculpture from Amen Corner.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7690/16681969644_561666d19b_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7690/16681969644_561666d19b_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The road going from left to Right in the above picture is Ave Maria Lane, of which there is not too much to talk about, other than the sculptures.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8759/17302595532_3ea3dd110c_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8759/17302595532_3ea3dd110c_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
At this southern end of the lane is Ludgate Hill to the West and St. Paul's Churchyard to the east, which goes straight past the main entrance to the Cathedral. Of course the obvious thing to do here was to photograph someone holding up a big advertising board for a fish and chip restaurant. I have no idea what the fish and chips are like, but just follow the arrow to the right and you will find the restaurant on Carter Lane.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7717/17118220549_3f0382babe_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7717/17118220549_3f0382babe_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Just off Paternoster Square and going around the north side of the cathedral is Paternoster Row.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7694/16661230403_8336e18d58_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7694/16661230403_8336e18d58_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This then turns back into St. Paul's Churchyard according to the maps, and then depending on which map you look at back into Paternoster Row. However the street sign on the wall just by where I took this shot said it was St. Paul's Churchyard.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7685/17279651292_32f62940a8_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7685/17279651292_32f62940a8_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Off the row and leading heading north to Newgate Street is Queens Head Passage.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7679/16659048144_88d4b8306f_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7679/16659048144_88d4b8306f_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Jumping around a bit now back to Ave Maria Lane which heading north turns into Warwick Lane.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8693/17116886210_67fc33b7e2_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8693/17116886210_67fc33b7e2_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Just off of here is a little Square called Warwick Square, where I have a rare shot in colour.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8734/16684178573_063dacd1ae_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8734/16684178573_063dacd1ae_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
More jumping again and back to the south side of the cathedral. Peter's Hill leads you down to the Millennium or Wobbly bridge. What appears to be just one street is actually with Peters' Hill forking to the west to become Sermon Lane. You could easily miss this uninteresting fact, as I did previously when I photographed the "hill" but I had to come back to get Sermon Lane.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7719/17281004541_3d9fa339cc_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7719/17281004541_3d9fa339cc_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
At the top of the above image is another tiny little street I also hadn't noticed before. It has the great name of Knightrider Court, and if you are of a similar age to myself you will no doubt be humming a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbfVmzF7N4g" target="_blank">theme tune</a> from a time when David Hasselhoff was cool not just in Germany.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8701/17281507025_0346a9f66d_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8701/17281507025_0346a9f66d_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The court is no longer than what you can see in the image above. The figure above is heading down the similarly greatly names Knightrider Street.<br />
<br />
One final jump takes us to the also wonderfully named Old Fish Street Hill which is Just off Queen Victoria street and leads up to Cannon Street and St. Paul's Churchyard via Distaff Lane.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8733/16661278553_d161fdbfdb_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8733/16661278553_d161fdbfdb_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
And that takes us up to the end of April, so still a fair bit behind on this blogging lark.<br />
<br />

The first lot of shots were taken in the morning prior to work and the sun was still fairly low and casting lots of nice shadows. First up is Great St. Thomas Apostle, just next to Mansion House tube station. Until the great fire of London, the medieval church of St. Thomas the Apostle was sited here. It was originally built in 1170 and at the time was simply called the Church of St. Thomas. However a few years later cam the Church of St. Thomas a Becket in Cheapside, and there was a need to distinguish between the two.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7586/17199331191_127286f46c_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7586/17199331191_127286f46c_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Heading along here and away from Mansion House, the street turns into Cloak Lane and just off Cloak Lane is College Hill where I took the following shot.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5469/17013769079_1b0f821d1e_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5469/17013769079_1b0f821d1e_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<br />
Back towards the tube station and behind it lies Great Trinity Lane.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7609/16992490887_33925085ae_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7609/16992490887_33925085ae_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Off of here is Little Trinity Lane, which is perhaps longer rather than littler, but which presented littler photographic opportunities.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7620/17199324651_4d6879c4e5_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7620/17199324651_4d6879c4e5_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Running down the side of the tube station is Garlick Hill and towards the bottom of the hill I came to perhaps the smallest "street" that I have come across during this project. Minver place as you can see from the image below is not much longer than the length of a motorbike. I don't think it would be wide enough to park a car, but If you could, I don't think you would be able to get out of the car.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8812/16579720143_a4bf47bc93_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8812/16579720143_a4bf47bc93_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
That was the last shot I took that morning, but during that week I made few attempts to photograph Albion Way, which is no where near here but just off the Rotunda by the Museum of London. I finally settled on this image looking down a car park stairwell. I think it is only the second time I have done some "colour popping" (the first was also a picture in this project).<br />

A bit slower mind you due to a couple of things. Firstly work has been very busy. Secondly as I have started to get towards the end of this project, I started thinking about what I was going to do afterwards, which seemed to have the effect of slowing me down.<br />
<br />
Anyway, on the with the show, and since I am blogging on photos taken in March, details may not be so clear in my head. As the title suggests ,this was another half days vacation, and I concentrated my efforts around the Blackfriars area. First of all though I had to get there so filled in a couple of streets along the way. First up was Distaff Lane which snakes a bit between Queen Victoria Street and Cannon Street. I was attracted to the shadows and reflections of light from windows in this particular shot.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8724/16690807427_03899d2d1f_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8724/16690807427_03899d2d1f_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
A bit further along Queen Victoria Street on the southern side is <a href="http://www.stbenetwelshchurch.org.uk/" target="_blank">St. Benet's Metropolitan Welsh Church</a> which conducts services in Welsh. Can you guess what destroyed the church and who rebuilt it? Snaking around the church is St. Bennet's Hill (curious that the church has one 'n' in it and the street two) where I took this image of some road cones on the pavement.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7635/16872239126_011813a08f_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7635/16872239126_011813a08f_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
A bit further along Queen Victoria Street was White Lion Hill. It was closed to traffic as there was lots of work going on, but there would not have been much too photograph on a busy day. I took my inspiration from some steps that led down to the Thames footpath.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8737/16289705803_4a057486b5_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8737/16289705803_4a057486b5_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Continuing along Queen Victoria Street, I came to the wonderfully named Puddle Dock. Unsurprisingly it was previously a dock, and hopefully deeper than a puddle, otherwise it would not have been much use as a dock.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7602/16872243736_197dd93086_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7602/16872243736_197dd93086_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Next up was Blackfriars bridge where I spotted a giant pigeon about to trample an office block before going on a ride, King Kong style on the London Eye.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8741/16690810647_23456480cf_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8741/16690810647_23456480cf_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Going North, the road going across the bridge becomes New Bridge Street where I photographed <a href="http://www.cheekychicos.co.uk/" target="_blank">Cheeky Chicos</a> - I hope they appreciate the huge amount of web traffic I send there way :-)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8722/16710507868_918af67ccb_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8722/16710507868_918af67ccb_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Round the side of Blackfriars station is Blackfriars Passage. Its the sort of street that nobody other than black cab drivers with <a href="https://www.tfl.gov.uk/info-for/taxis-and-private-hire/become-a-taxi-licensee/learn-the-knowledge-of-london" target="_blank">"The Knowledge"</a> know about or use. There is not really anything there, but I spent a few minutes getting an image of a security camera seemingly recording my shadow,<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8747/16702393087_cfd660e2b1_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8747/16702393087_cfd660e2b1_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
A bit further north now to Waithman Street where it seems they are rather fond of their wall. I wonder if bicycle's are OK?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8699/16287348194_5b409ab10d_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8699/16287348194_5b409ab10d_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
At one end of Waithman Street is Blackfriars Lane where I photographed the following image - another one where I liked the light and shadows.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7286/16287349754_455e0b41f6_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7286/16287349754_455e0b41f6_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Off this lane is Playhouse Yard where I took a couple of images.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7603/16702398197_ec69477c35_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7603/16702398197_ec69477c35_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7640/16723546939_78c949dcb6_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7640/16723546939_78c949dcb6_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Back up Blackfriars lane and heading north it turns into Ludgate Broadway where I saw some more interesting light and shadow.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8692/17008880115_0c779ed383_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8692/17008880115_0c779ed383_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Just off of here is Cobbs Court which then leads onto Priory Court.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7624/16821382190_d304a4d3a7_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7624/16821382190_d304a4d3a7_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8750/17007467502_2519a757df_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8750/17007467502_2519a757df_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Next up is Church Entry. Is this area stood the Dominican priory of the Blackfriars. The name Churhc Entry would indicate the usual passage between the nave and the chancel.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7611/17008883615_2878e50206_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7611/17008883615_2878e50206_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The final picture from this day was taken outside The Cockpit pub on Ireland Yard, and is slightly strange. Of course the answer to the question is "Yes, I saw it at Blackfriars Bridge, about to flatten an office block!".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7611/16388771543_75cff096cd_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7611/16388771543_75cff096cd_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And that takes us up to the end of March, so in my usual fashion I will show the map of my progress.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

But this is a continuation from my last post, where I took a half days vacation.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first image below was taken on Ludgate Hill and was of a gentleman who had been attending the Afghanistan remembrance service at St. Paul's Cathedral.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7597/16812770036_607544fe3b_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7597/16812770036_607544fe3b_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The following shot was also taken at Ludgate Hill.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8751/16218650963_d84e5e9e35_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8751/16218650963_d84e5e9e35_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Walking down New Bridge Street from I then stopped at Pilgrim Street<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7610/16661341888_f8e32fd2f5_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7610/16661341888_f8e32fd2f5_z.jpg" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Continuing down New Bridge Street, I came to another raised street with steps leading up to it - Apothecary Street.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8656/16661558090_27000b2886_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8656/16661558090_27000b2886_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On the other side of New Bridge Street from here is Bridewell place.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8603/16641616487_75d6b781e3_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8603/16641616487_75d6b781e3_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And the last shot of the day was taken on Watergate, again just off New Bridge Street.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8647/16661559670_03d341605e_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8647/16661559670_03d341605e_z.jpg" /></a></div>

<br /></div>
<div>
This post will focus on one of those half days, but first of there are a few shots from a late lunchtime walk. The first shot is from Bread Street, which is fairly close to St. Paul's and runs from Cheapside down to Queen Victoria Street. Bread St is the principal street of the Bread Street ward and the name originates from it being the main market place for selling bread in days gone by.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8594/16177652883_2a1dc3f4a8_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8594/16177652883_2a1dc3f4a8_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
At the western end of Cheapside is New Change, which borders the edge of St. Paul's cathedral. The following shot was taken right on the corner with Cheapside.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8566/16590284817_1d5bda3f22_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8566/16590284817_1d5bda3f22_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The final image from this brief walk was taken on Paternoster Square.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8578/16175248764_ceffeef9ee_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8578/16175248764_ceffeef9ee_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On my two half days off I wanted to concentrate on the areas furthest away from my office that were still to be photographed - the streets on the east side of Farringdon Street from Holburn Viaduct all the way down to Blackfriars Bridge.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My starting street was the interestingly named Turnagain lane. The name apparently comes from the fact that the street did (but no longer) lead to the Fleet Rive. Bit since there was no bridge to cross, if you wished to cross, then you had to turn back round. Less interesting were the photographic opportunities and I came away with a rather disappointing image.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8668/16639663218_4e3f6ce080_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8668/16639663218_4e3f6ce080_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The next street on the east side of Farringdon Street (heading South) is Newcastle Close.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8625/16641114429_00ca683bae_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8625/16641114429_00ca683bae_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Next up was Bear Alley, a dreary looking dead end of a street. The name would seem to come from the the Bear Inn once located here and the one popular sport of bear bating.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8603/16639851500_047eafe131_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8603/16639851500_047eafe131_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I then came to another dreary looking dead end, Old Fleet Lane. Leading from the lane at the side of an office block where some steps that are the start of Fleet Place. It could be questioned which street this image counts towards since the steps of Fleet Place could be considered as the main subject matter, but the image was taken whilst standing on Old Fleet Lane and the foreground is also on the lane. However it's my project and my rules.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8637/16641118039_007167d1c9_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8637/16641118039_007167d1c9_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The steps are definitely part of Fleet Place and the following image was taken from the bottom of the steps looking up. It was quite a busy passage and I had to wait about 10-15 minutes to get the shot I was looking for.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7631/16204882604_a97dd8e01a_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7631/16204882604_a97dd8e01a_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Next was Old Seacoal Lane, a challenging place to get a decent picture.and I don't like this particular image. The street gets its name from the time when barges transporting coal from the Thames and along the river Fleet would unload here. Oliver Golsmith the novelist, playwright and poet once resided here.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8641/16619921417_8a0f11a738_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8641/16619921417_8a0f11a738_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The road leads round to Limeburner Lane, which was only constructed in the 1990's. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8707/16652471879_2a53495e14_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8707/16652471879_2a53495e14_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
At the end of this lane and parallel to it is St. George's Court, whose existence seems only to serve an underground car park.</div>
<div>

<br /></div>

At the same end of the lane is Old Bailey, the location of the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales. The original medeival court stood from at least 1585. It was destroyed in the Great Fire of London and rebuilt in 1674, with several re-buildings since. The image below shows the main entrance to the courts.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Close by at the top end of Old Bailey are Bishop's Court and Green Arbour Court. I covered a couple of more streets on this day but will leave those for the next post.</div>

I'm hoping that I will be able to finish by the end of April or early May.<br />
<br />
I have a few pockets of areas where I have a few remaining streets to shoot. One of these is behind Barbican, around St. Bart's hospital, and I tried to complete to this area one morning before work.<br />
<br />
The first street I shot was Bartholomew Close which is a longish U shaped road. I had been around here a couple of times and was not really inspired. On this occasion I managed a couple of shots. The first is just a bike rack and a puddle which really doesn't sound very exciting, but I'm really pleased with this shot. I think it is a good example of how my eye for detail has improved over the course of this project and I think this is partly down to having to take a picture of every single street - finding something worthy of raising the camera is not always easy. I don't always get a good image or one that I am overly happy with, but I think doing that on every street is nigh on impossible.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8607/16107073323_c9b107d679_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8607/16107073323_c9b107d679_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8661/16104705684_6faf8e2e93_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8661/16104705684_6faf8e2e93_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
An example of where my eye for detail was not quite so good was just around the corner on Halfmoon Court. There was not a lot to shoot here, but I decided to take the image below of some signs outside a car park. I think the main thing that intrigued me here was the sign saying "Dry Falling main car park" which sounds a bit ominous and like it may not be a great place to stand. I had no idea what it meant, but couldn't help looking upwards. On googling the term now I think it may have something to do with <a href="http://www.fireprotectiononline.co.uk/dry-falling-main-6617.html" target="_blank">fire protection equipment</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8611/16725787751_35815d482c_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8611/16725787751_35815d482c_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
One other street I had previously missed out is Smithfield Street, which as the name suggests, is close to Smithfield market.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8596/16725783411_b24fdbfbc3_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8596/16725783411_b24fdbfbc3_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
That was all of I manged to shoot on that particular morning. There are two streets left to photograph in that area, both of which are partly closed off due to construction work and which I have so far struggled for inspiration.<br />
<br />
A couple of days later I wandered around the Cannon Street Area for a bit. The are a couple of streets here named after a Laurence Pountney, presumably they are named after the St. Laurence Pountney church. This church is no longer, and was destroyed during the great fire of London. However an eye witness claims that the church fire started from with inside, implying arson. Laurence Pountney Lane is one of the couple of street I photographed on this day, where I shot some shadows from a tree.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8664/16756704345_cbaee66627_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8664/16756704345_cbaee66627_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
From here a little alley leads to Laurence Pountney Hill (still to photograph) and Suffolk Lane. The shot below was taken at the side of Prudential's headquarters. The footpath leads to a bridge that crosses Upper Thames Street.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8580/16089151683_667d3495bb_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8580/16089151683_667d3495bb_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Also close by is Gophir Lane.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8680/16708045682_82e6708182_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8680/16708045682_82e6708182_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
On the other side of Cannon Street Station is Dowgate Hill, named after the Dowgate Ward of the city.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8648/16708046832_e9c24d24dc_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8648/16708046832_e9c24d24dc_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
A bit further along Cannon Street, I came to Queen Street which I had already photographed previously. The image below is not particularly good, but I liked the fact that the Dominos delivery motorbikes where all in a line leaning over, a bit like dominoes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8647/16708048262_7d7d9b849e_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8647/16708048262_7d7d9b849e_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Walking back down Dowgate Hill, and crossing Upper Thames Street, leads onto Cousin Lane.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8563/16569139818_da908b1655_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8563/16569139818_da908b1655_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I then headed back up the hill a little and turned onto College Street.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7590/16755641662_d498943466_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7590/16755641662_d498943466_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
College Street then turns into Skinners Lane, where I took my favorite image of the day.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8702/16730818386_6fae677a27_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8702/16730818386_6fae677a27_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
On my way back to the office I took a minor detour to Cheapside to photograph Crown Court. This was a little courtyard that I had previously missed and only noticed when filling in my map.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7584/16755541581_35f8af6449_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7584/16755541581_35f8af6449_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17891149751884249364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8280441262041978686.post-3146681422086329152015-03-05T13:42:00.001-08:002015-03-05T13:42:10.090-08:00Back on the horse againAfter almost a month of pottering around the house and working from home, it was good to get out and about with my camera. It was also good to walk around an area that was new to me, or new to this project anyway - a triangular area between Queen Victoria Street, Cheapside and St. Paul's Cathedral.<br />
<br />
I will start off with my favorite image from this day, which was of a very friendly butcher at Jamie Oliver's Barbecoa restaurant on Watling Street, a stones throw from the cathedral. Watling Street is was an ancient trackway that ran from Canterbury to St. Albans and later extended to Wroxeter by the Romans. More details are at <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watling_Street" target="_blank">wikipedia</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7379/16342534047_362733eb32_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7379/16342534047_362733eb32_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had actually started off this little outing on St. Stephens Row, which is behind Mansion House and just outside the area described above.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8613/15905862654_bf3ac36f1c_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8613/15905862654_bf3ac36f1c_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I then made my way onto Queen Victoria Street and to the rather challenging Sise Lane, which is not much longer than what you can see in the picture below. I think this image falls into "best of a bad job" category,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7313/16502428836_f52498aef3_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7313/16502428836_f52498aef3_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Round the corner from here is Pancras Lane. The following image is from the site of the former St. Pancras church which was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. Its now a lovely little garden of which more detail can be found at the website its creators <a href="http://www.studioweave.com/projects/detail/pancras-garden/" target="_blank">Studio Weave</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7406/16342529507_ae88253e88_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7406/16342529507_ae88253e88_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next up was Well Court, which owes its name to seven watering holes sunk there during Roman Times. Excavation of this alley has led the discovery of many roman building remains and artifacts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7349/16528467545_3b30f0ec59_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7349/16528467545_3b30f0ec59_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Walking through the arch at the end of Well Court, leads to Bow Lane, named after the St, Mary-le-Bow church on Cheapside.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7387/16526723831_f962508706_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7387/16526723831_f962508706_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Just off of Bow Lane Bow Churchyard, which surrounds St. Mary-le-Bow church. Im quite pleased with the image below, even if I do say so myself.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7342/16342532877_2a7473b148_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7342/16342532877_2a7473b148_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
My final image of the this outing was back on Queen Victoria Street.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8578/15905871624_5db85f9f11_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8578/15905871624_5db85f9f11_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I had quite a bit of holiday left over from last year, so took a day off to do some photography. However the weather was awful. I did manage to get a few good shots, but most were on the south side of the Thames and therefore not in the city and not part of this project. The only shot within the city that I managed to get was on Carter Lane.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7436/15964962983_8f01c1e0f9_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7436/15964962983_8f01c1e0f9_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
And that is all I managed to take in February, so below is the updated map.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Y0kMeJlBLrU/VPjNoWgmSLI/AAAAAAAACQ8/dAEWLyNW46E/s1600/February%2B2015.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Y0kMeJlBLrU/VPjNoWgmSLI/AAAAAAAACQ8/dAEWLyNW46E/s1600/February%2B2015.jpg" /></a></div>

<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17891149751884249364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8280441262041978686.post-373489374815437942015-02-06T13:20:00.002-08:002015-02-06T13:20:35.362-08:00Up to date finallyThis week I went out with my camera for the first time in over a month, as I have not been out and about much whilst I get over the chest infection I had. Since I now need to start editing and blogging again, I thought I better get up to date. So this post is the last of the images from last year, taken in the area between Holborn and Fleet Street. Since it was a while ago now, I may not have much to comment about.<br />
<br />
First up is Harp Alley, which runs between St. Bride Street and Farringdon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7565/15949534198_41c7f56322_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7565/15949534198_41c7f56322_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Continuing down St. Bride's street, there is a fork to the right called Poppin's Court.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8630/15950906039_98a0381a25_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8630/15950906039_98a0381a25_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Now we are onto Fleet Street and the following image, from next to Ye Old Cheshire Cheese, was taken from the hip.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7547/15949682590_f826b7523f_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7547/15949682590_f826b7523f_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
To the side of the pub is Cheshire Court, where the following picture was taken.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8601/16111196926_6d60b35c53_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8601/16111196926_6d60b35c53_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
There are quite a few little alleys off Fleet Street, many of which I have covered in previous posts, but a few more follow below, which I will simply name.<br />
<br />
Gough Square<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7558/15514653734_2e809edf12_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7558/15514653734_2e809edf12_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hind Court</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8652/15525832284_a680dcc2bc_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8652/15525832284_a680dcc2bc_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Bolt Court<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7544/16148172795_f8854d327c_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7544/16148172795_f8854d327c_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
St. Dunstans Court<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8678/16147415052_e0841b1d4e_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8678/16147415052_e0841b1d4e_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Heading back north away from Fleet Street now. Next up is Pemberton Row which is just off New Fetter Lane.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7565/15962095509_9999ca119d_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7565/15962095509_9999ca119d_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Nevill Lane is also off of New Fetter Lane and leads to what appears to be a fairly new and shiny office and retail space at New Street Square.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7503/15962102379_373dc875c8_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7503/15962102379_373dc875c8_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Continuing up New Fetter Lane is Rolls Buildings.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7538/16146262011_440f983c6d_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7538/16146262011_440f983c6d_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
And finally my last shot of the day, was of Plumtree Court,<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8664/15962414577_9fcedbfcb6_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8664/15962414577_9fcedbfcb6_z.jpg" /></a></div>

I have had a chest infection, which got quite bad just before Christmas and I was told my doctors to stay in doors for a bit, in addition to the medication. So I was pretty much housebound for a month. I haven't yet picked up my camera this year, but I may resume the project next week. In the meantime I still have one days shots to post, which will likely take up this and the next post.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The shots here, were taken before Christmas, on my birthday. I took a half days holiday in order to try and complete the area between Holborn and Fleet Street. I started off on the east end of Holborn, where St. Andrew Avenue and New Fetter Lane join onto Holborn Circus. Here I met an Iranian man who was on day 18 of a 30 day hunger strike and protesting for the freedom of political prisoners, democracy, equal rights and freedom of speech. I spent a a while talking to him and was humbled by the experience. It was a very brave and courageous thing that he was doing, something that know I couldn't do.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7470/15945504738_1f9764c8b5_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7470/15945504738_1f9764c8b5_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8622/16107142776_595c4ff9bc_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8622/16107142776_595c4ff9bc_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After we finished our conversation, I continued up Holborn which turns into High Holburn just past the tube station, a fact I had not realised when in this area previously.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7554/15510598124_6e45a9d252_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7554/15510598124_6e45a9d252_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
From here I then headed back down Holborn to photograph some of the streets off it, gradually heading south towards Fleet Street. The next stop was Furnival Street. Behind the doors in the shot below is a goods lift, that dates back to the late 1940’s and which leads down to an endless warren of tunnels known initially as The Chancery Lane Deep Shelter, and latterly as the Kingsway Trunk Exchange. After the war, the tunnels were briefly occupied by nearly 400 tons of Public Records Office documents, until in the late 1940’s, with the Government’s increasing realisation of how vulnerable the Capital’s communications networks would be in a time of conflict, it was decided to transform the tunnels into a protected trunk telephone exchange.This huge undertaking was completed in 1954, and a couple of hundred people worked down there until the 1980's.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7468/15510599424_d7b7ee7326_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7468/15510599424_d7b7ee7326_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Just off of here is Took Court.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7512/16132937345_b5750432d7_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7512/16132937345_b5750432d7_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
At the end of both Furnival Street and TookCourt is Cursitor Street. There was quite a lot of building work going on here as you can see in the image, which limited options somewhat. The man coming towards me in the shot, stopped to chat to me for a few minutes. He was interested in my cameras, which he thought was a Leica; he owned one and was quite disappointed to find out that it was not.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7564/15946859799_261a108a12_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7564/15946859799_261a108a12_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Also off of Furnival Street is Norwich Street.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7526/15946861099_2afbc797b9_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7526/15946861099_2afbc797b9_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This leads to Fetter Lane, and from here I went through Plough Lane.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7465/16132195242_a7a9f2f32e_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7465/16132195242_a7a9f2f32e_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Plough Lane then leads to New Fetter Lane, where I took a couple of images. The first is a reflection which doesn't really work, and the second is the empty interior of an office - here I quite liked the stark white emptiness , broken up the ladder. Its not a great shot, but I don't think it would have worked had the ladder not been there, or the ladder had been a plain metal variety.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7465/16132942905_2daeb58d1f_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7465/16132942905_2daeb58d1f_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7543/16107153256_77460d74d1_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7543/16107153256_77460d74d1_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I then continued east for a few streets onto Little New Street.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7578/16135080231_e5ef4f1042_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7578/16135080231_e5ef4f1042_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Just off here leading to Faringdon Street is Stonecutter Street, which is the last image of the post. The rest of the streets I photographed this day, will follow in another post.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7568/16111193066_87e70ac0af_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7568/16111193066_87e70ac0af_z.jpg" /></a></div>

The few images here were all taken before xmas, and this little outing completed this section of the map.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
First up is King Street. Walking along here, the sun was low and creating some really nice long shadows, though the strong sunlight was also a little problematic.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7477/15895850967_a18e112dc6_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7477/15895850967_a18e112dc6_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Parallel to King Street is of Lawrence Lane. I wasn't overly inspired here but decided to focus on the man getting into his car, getting down low to use the yellow line as a lead-in.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7536/15461953903_756c010307_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7536/15461953903_756c010307_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Off of King Street, and which leads to Lawrence Lane, is Trump Street.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7499/15459309354_03eab118dd_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7499/15459309354_03eab118dd_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Trump Street very quickly turns into Russia Row. In the image below I was inspired to take a sneaky looking sort of shot, but with a juxtaposition provided by the security camera. Photographers get a raw deal from the public sometimes and whilst I have never had a problem I do know of people who have had abuse hurled at them because they happened to be photographing in the vicinity of (fully clothed) children, but not photographing them. In 2013 it was <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/10172298/One-surveillance-camera-for-every-11-people-in-Britain-says-CCTV-survey.html" target="_blank">reported</a> that the UK had just under 6 million CCTV cameras, or one per eleven of the population, with 5.5 million of those are in private hands. Mobile apps are now available that offer live streaming of cctv footage, yet few people seem concerned about whom is videoing our streets and what the footage is being used for.</div>
<div>
I have been stopped a few times by people since I started this project, but most were just curious as to what I was photographing, and all took a genuine interest in the project and wished me luck, when I told them about it. It did however take me quite a while to have some level of confidence to photograph on the street, and to begin with I was very nervous about doing so. I think it helps that Londoners are so used to tourists taking pictures. The paranoia about photographers being pedophiles or terrorists means that whilst we are in an age where more people have cameras than ever before, we are not documenting our streets or way or life as much as we used to. A related matter, is the increasing amount of huge areas of private land, where you are restricted from taking photographs by over zealous security guards if they deem you to be in possession of a "professional" looking camera of heaven forbid a tripod. The whole of the Canary Wharf estate is privately owned, as are large sections of the South Bank, and photography there can be problematic.</div>
<div>
<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7580/15459310434_ef1f255c1c_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7580/15459310434_ef1f255c1c_z.jpg" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Right, off my high horse. A bit further west, and between Wood Street and Gutter Lane is Goldsmith Street. I was quite pleased with the image below, the timing was spot on.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7536/16079688001_a48b87caab_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7536/16079688001_a48b87caab_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Half way down Gutter Lane and leading to Foster Lane is Priest's Court.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7576/15894180818_bf3999bae1_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7576/15894180818_bf3999bae1_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
At on point this splits into two alleys, the other being Rose and Crown Court.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7484/15895529029_9dd97a7e02_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7484/15895529029_9dd97a7e02_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The final image of the day was taken on Carey Lane, which also connects Gutter Lane and Foster Lane.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7544/16080915632_fe96f2a3b1_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7544/16080915632_fe96f2a3b1_z.jpg" /></a></div>

<br />
First up is Honey Lane, my favourite image from this post. The street visible at the end of the passage is Cheapside.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8657/15451290674_b8f128640b_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8657/15451290674_b8f128640b_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The following image is of Prudent Passage,which connects Ironmonger Lane, with King Street.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7579/15886310770_abc5634bac_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7579/15886310770_abc5634bac_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Also connecting Old Jewry with Ironmonger Lane is St. Olaves Court, once the location of the St. Olave, Old Jewry church. the church was destroyed by the great fire of London and rebuilt by who else but Sir Christopher Wren. The church was mostly demolished in 1887, and all that remains are the tower and west wall.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7533/15576903934_86b0e04ee9_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7533/15576903934_86b0e04ee9_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
On Ironmonger lane itself there was a very popular cafe/takeaway place with a long queue outside, where I took the following shot.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7468/15887824577_af081176c5_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7468/15887824577_af081176c5_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Heading further along towards St. Pauls, I then took two pictures of the same building but on/of different streets - Milk Street and Compter Passage which leads to Wood Street.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7503/15887830747_a74776fe81_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7503/15887830747_a74776fe81_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8615/15887498209_6fe51a7927_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8615/15887498209_6fe51a7927_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
My last image of the day was from Frederick's Place (just off Old Jewry) and is evidence of a xmas drinks party the night before - I'm a little surprised by the coffee cup.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7498/15453923463_bfe4e56bb1_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7498/15453923463_bfe4e56bb1_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />

<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17891149751884249364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8280441262041978686.post-41586839463992870982014-12-30T07:19:00.000-08:002014-12-30T07:19:34.326-08:00Do they know its Christmas time at allChristmas has passed at the time of writing this, but as ever I am a catching up. I dont know whether its because I try do so as much of my Christmas shopping online, but I didnt seem to be exposed to so much Christmas stuff and it seemed relatively subdued. I even managed to completely avoid the latest band aid record; like some of the artists that declined an offer to perform, I chose to donate in other ways.<br />
<br />
Anyway having justified the title of the post, its time to get on with it; two sets of images from different days and different parts of the city, both from half an hour or so breaks from the office. First up is Mansion House Street, a small stretch of road directly in front of the Mansion House; the home and office of the Lord Mayor of London.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7543/15403420823_b27b43e66c_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7543/15403420823_b27b43e66c_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
A short distance from here down Queen Victoria Street is Bucklersbury. The image below is taken at the building site for Bloomberg's new headquarters. When the previous building was being built, the remains of the the roman Temple of Mithras were found. Progress was not impeded though and the temple was relocated to a street level roof of a car park (of all things), Now they are on the move again and will be relocated back to the original location. Hooray. There are some more details at the <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2012/jan/19/roman-temple-mithras" target="_blank">guardian</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8633/15997278436_e606d9027e_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8633/15997278436_e606d9027e_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
From here I moved down onto Cannon Street and some of the roads off it. When I first entered Salters Hall Court I was completely uninspired and decided to come back another day, However on walking up the next parallel street to it, St. Swithins Lane, I came across a garage entrance to the court and noticed this silhouetted woman.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7488/15835803980_9672c9da89_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7488/15835803980_9672c9da89_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I continued up St. Swithins Lane, before heading back to the office.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7538/15403425533_76cc500218_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7538/15403425533_76cc500218_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
A couple of days later I had another short break from the office, this time filling in some of the streets around St. Bartholomew's hospital. Newbury Street was not very inspiring, and the best I could do was to frame someone in some scaffolding.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7520/16026843606_2a807de88a_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7520/16026843606_2a807de88a_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Next stop was Bartholomew Place, a small courtyard of sorts, but with a charming looking picture framers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7483/16050672721_df19e768e2_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7483/16050672721_df19e768e2_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Across from here is Bartholomew Close which then leads to Middlesex Passage, a twisty turny alley. I spotted a couple of hospital workers here on an unofficial smoking break who would have made a great photo, but they refused to have there photo taken as they shouldn't have been there,<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8681/15865339660_d683476b89_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8681/15865339660_d683476b89_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Also off of the close is Bartholomew Passage, which is very short and does not present many photographic opportunities.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7501/15430334984_cb91960052_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7501/15430334984_cb91960052_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I then backtracked a little and onto Kinghorn Street, where the rain had produced nice shiny reflections on the pavement.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8590/15866864417_509dc4ccf5_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8590/15866864417_509dc4ccf5_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
My last shot of this area was of Cloth Street, which I had been down several times previously without managing to take a shot. I got one this time, but its nothing to write home about; if the scaffolding looks familiar its because the shot was taken from the end of Newbury Street, the first image in this post.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7572/15866573689_22cc7f8eee_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7572/15866573689_22cc7f8eee_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I then headed back to the office, but via a long route, down to St. Pauls tube station and onto Cheapside, before going down Foster Lane, were I shot by my favourite image of the two days.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7490/15865171048_da3ceb3e9f_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7490/15865171048_da3ceb3e9f_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
From here I walked along Gresham Street, which I had photographed previously, but my eye spotted the steps outside the building below, which made great lead-in-lines.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8669/15432983133_6a22ca9b70_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8669/15432983133_6a22ca9b70_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
My final image of the day and this post, was taken later that afternoon, from my office as the sun was setting. It was a lovely sunset and made a nice image.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7581/16051926102_0199b8c428_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7581/16051926102_0199b8c428_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17891149751884249364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8280441262041978686.post-7462034111796625242014-12-19T02:58:00.001-08:002014-12-23T13:51:37.878-08:00Another month passesThis post marks the end of November (still a bit behind) and I'm beginning to feel like the end is in sight, but only a little closer than the horizon. The shots here were taken on two days in the last week of the month and are a mixture of around Cannon Street or down on the Thames footpath.<br />
<br />
First up is Abchurch Yard. Not my best picture but any means but I like the lead in lines here. The building in the background is St. Mary Abchurch (another post fire of london Wren Church).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7554/15998211945_9595dab8c1_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7554/15998211945_9595dab8c1_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The following shot is taken on the steps at the entrance to Cannon Street station.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7514/15810833678_f0656d258b_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7514/15810833678_f0656d258b_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Next is Swan Lane which leads from Upper Thames Street down to the Thames. I have seen some great pictures of the building in the picture below in the past, with the bright yellow of the building contrasting against a clear blue sky and I have wanted to take such a shot, but didn't recognise the building at the time. Instead I opted for a reflection shot and perhaps it is a good thing that I found my own image rather than copied someone else's, even if mine is not as good.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7562/15810951390_2f1b5cfa15_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7562/15810951390_2f1b5cfa15_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I then walked along the Thames footpath, where the name changes frequently. The fist image below is of Oystergate Walk, and the second is Hanseatic Walk.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8575/15998215845_f571518153_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8575/15998215845_f571518153_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8680/15810835208_174dd45b19_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8680/15810835208_174dd45b19_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The following day I headed down to the river again, filling in a few streets along the way. Birchin Lane was one of the last, if not the last street between Cornhill and Lombard Street, that I still needed to photograph.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7573/15383559194_1752f96b29_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7573/15383559194_1752f96b29_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
A bit further on and on the south side of Cannon Street is Martin Lane.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7501/15820064987_44167b7552_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7501/15820064987_44167b7552_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The bottom of Martin Lane leads onto Arthur Street where I encountered some construction workers engaging in traffic duties.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7554/15818560250_5c4091a530_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7554/15818560250_5c4091a530_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
From here I crossed Upper Thames Street and onto Angel Lane whose most prominent feature is a large shiny building occupied by the Japanese bank Nomura.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7540/15820066707_9bbe9b9ea3_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7540/15820066707_9bbe9b9ea3_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
At the end of Angel Lane is the Thames footpath and I walked westerly along here for a bit, My next image is of Steelyard Passage which passes underneath Cannon Street station. Its quite a dark passage but does have some ground level lights. It also features a sound installation that allegedly plays industrial sounds from days gone by, but personally I thought it sounded quite spooky.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8604/16053380931_62534b7cf7_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8604/16053380931_62534b7cf7_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
My last shot of the day and of the month also was of Peters Hill, which leads from the river up to St. Paul's Cathedral. On the left of the image below is the millennium (or wobbly) bridge.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7527/15383558324_979d156275_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7527/15383558324_979d156275_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The updated map now looks as follows -<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_UCib6lZc3c/VJQEqQcvc8I/AAAAAAAACCc/DtNUkQV3PeY/s1600/city%2Bof%2BLondon%2B-%2Bnovember.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_UCib6lZc3c/VJQEqQcvc8I/AAAAAAAACCc/DtNUkQV3PeY/s1600/city%2Bof%2BLondon%2B-%2Bnovember.jpg" /></a></div>
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17891149751884249364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8280441262041978686.post-75158465719977798902014-12-16T01:31:00.000-08:002014-12-16T01:31:00.114-08:00A half day - Part twoI am going to start off the second part of my half day with my favourite image of the day, and the second time I asked someone if I could take their picture. I did by a coffee but he was such a nice bloke I don't think he wouldn't have minded even if I hadn't bought a drink.The image itself was taken on St. Bride's Avenue in front of the church of that name. A church has been on this site since the 7th Century and was one of many which was destroyed by the Great fire of London, designed or built by Sir Christoper Wren and then again damaged during the second world war.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7524/15798456578_f1df5ed21e_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7524/15798456578_f1df5ed21e_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Now going back a bit in the afternoon and a much less interesting shot on Whitefriars Street.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7472/15357053694_89a604530f_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7472/15357053694_89a604530f_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Almost opposite here is Primrose Hill, which is not much of a hill, more of a gentle incline. I was lacking inspiration a little here, but thought the dark building with all its patterns and lines might look slightly interesting against a stark sky. I was right, but only slightly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7496/15359695743_b9478cce8c_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7496/15359695743_b9478cce8c_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Between here and Dorse Rise lies Hutton Street a featureless street, which I tried to rescue with a bit of strong processing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8610/15359696623_8af0356c5e_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8610/15359696623_8af0356c5e_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Close by is Dorset building, and another average shot really, but there is something mildly interesting to tell here. After taking an image I always take an picture of the street sign to remind me of the location when I get home. When I looked at the street sign picture on my PC I noticed the street sign said EC2 - but this area was surely EC4, whilst EC2 is around Liverpool Street, Bank and Moorgate. Surely it was a mistake, and you can just make out on this <a href="https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/City+of+London,+Greater+London/@51.5132317,-0.1060008,3a,31.5y,81.59h,94.36t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sg1rtI9wtch5VibnGF4X2jg!2e0!4m2!3m1!1s0x487603554edf855f:0xa1185c8d19184c0?hl=en" target="_blank">Google Streetview Image</a> that there are two signs for the street directly opposite each other, one of which says EC2 and the other which says EC4.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7573/15357052384_f1ef6aaa78_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7573/15357052384_f1ef6aaa78_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Close by is Salisbury Square and the following shot was taken of a stairway leading from the square down to Primrose Hill - I was standing at the top of the stairs at the square so I am am counting it as that (and they are my rules so there).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7503/15792029870_8b4fa032fe_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7503/15792029870_8b4fa032fe_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Pleydell Street is few streets away from here, and geographically at least should have appeared in part one, as it is between Bouverie Street and Lombard Lane, both of which featured in that post. It is very short street and didn't have too much to photograph, so took a couple of visits to get something half decent.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7475/15359698543_7e6a61b5b1_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7475/15359698543_7e6a61b5b1_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Whilst heading back from Pleydell Street I noticed Salisbury Court, which is one of those annoying places that you think you have photographed only to find out that the street changes name. Salisbury Court is at the top (Fleet Street end) of Dorset Lane near the court of the same name (above). It was worth finding though as I came across this lovely building where the first edition of the Sunday Times was edited on October 20th 1822.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8594/15953555476_42589096e0_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8594/15953555476_42589096e0_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Heading back towards the first image in this post and to Bride Court, an image I really like, and Bride Lane, an image I like a lot less.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7473/15985183762_07e98ce98e_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7473/15985183762_07e98ce98e_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7578/15985186102_1fac0d1628_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7578/15985186102_1fac0d1628_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Close by is Ludgate Circus, which is basically the junction Ludgate Hill and Fleet Street meet Farrindon Street and New Bridge Street.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8639/15366232293_f961065942_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8639/15366232293_f961065942_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
At this point I had had enough and it was starting to rain and get dark. However I had noticed some lights on the ground at St. Brides Passage earlier that I thought might make an interesting image, so headed back there. Climbing the steps up the passage though I saw another opportunity for a shot and waited a few minutes for someone to come up the stairs. It was my last image of the day, and very nearly my favourite.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17891149751884249364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8280441262041978686.post-34630197506805599852014-12-15T14:26:00.000-08:002014-12-15T14:26:42.407-08:00A half day - Part OneThe western part of city from the Thames up to Holborn and west of Farringdon Street/ New Bridge Street is the furthest part of the city from my place of work, and therefore the longest to get to. This makes it an impossible area to visit either prior to work or in a lunch break. I recognised early on in the project that I would have to complete this area prior to the onset of winter and the dark nights, but failed to listen to myself. Thus I had to take some the first of at least a couple of half days vacation, in order to tackle this area during the week and in daylight.<br />
<br />
So I worked till lunch time and then headed off towards the river and down Kennett Wharf Lane, a little street off Upper Thames Street. There is not much to say about this shot except it looks like quite a few others that I have taken in this project.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7573/15247195624_bd7f88dde2_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7573/15247195624_bd7f88dde2_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
On reaching the river I took a little detour underneath Southward Bridge to photograph Fruiteres Passage. This rather lovely tunnel was built in the 1920's and is named after the worshipful company of fruiterers who had a warehouse on the banks of the river above. The walls of the tunnel feature murals depicting scenes of London, the originals of which are now in the Guildhall. I managed to catch some reflection of people at the far end, as they approach but before they enter the passage, which I thought gave the image a slightly ghostly feel, but that could just be me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7532/15682122090_3e7270f560_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7532/15682122090_3e7270f560_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I then turned around and headed west again and onto Queenhithe and then back onto Upper Thames Street. In doing so I missed out a few streets, but this area was not my main goal of the afternoon, so if I was not immediately inspired, then I carried on my way. At the end of Queenhithe, there is a bridge crossing Upper Thames Street; its questionable whether the southern side starts on Upper Thames Street or on High Timber Street, but the latter had limited opportunities for an interesting photograph, so the following image of that is bridge is credited to being on High Timber Street.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8635/15681938838_ae3f575436_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8635/15681938838_ae3f575436_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I then took the following image of a tunnel on Upper Thames Street that I quite like. I think its all the diagonal lines, and I had a couple of images with a lone taxi, but in the end settled for an image with no vehicles in it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7510/15249810973_d1b3d3b1d3_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7510/15249810973_d1b3d3b1d3_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Missing out a few more streets I headed back onto the Thames and onto Paul's Walk - this walkway stretches all the way to Victoria Embankment without changing name, a fact I was very glad of. Teh location of the image below was taken below Blackfriars railway bridge.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8664/15868827822_0223b8eb62_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8664/15868827822_0223b8eb62_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
On reaching Victoria Embankement I then headed away from the river and up towards Fleet Street; completing as much of this area as possible was my main goal of the afternoon. I started off on Tallis Street, where I photographed some of Boris' Bikes. I have photographed these a few times before as have many others but this was the first time I had seen a yellow one, and it contrasted nicely with the blue one; the workman in the orange jacket was an added bonus.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7484/15869453185_51044502a1_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7484/15869453185_51044502a1_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Continuing towards Fleet Street I then took a couple of pictures on Bouverie Street. The first is a bit more like my usual sort of short, whilst the second was an attempt to do something a little different and which I think turned out rather well - I like it anyway.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8619/15271947534_86dd9cc071_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8619/15271947534_86dd9cc071_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7560/15249813073_74d7ba1c82_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7560/15249813073_74d7ba1c82_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Just round the corner from here is Temple Lane, where I took a couple of more images.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7549/15868398516_547f844f0f_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7549/15868398516_547f844f0f_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8652/15894214925_33f77850a3_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8652/15894214925_33f77850a3_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
At the top of Temple Lane is Lombard Lane, where due to a lack of inspiration, I photographed myself or at least my reflection. My shadow has appeared previously in the project and now my reflection.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7490/15894216065_74f706b2fd_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7490/15894216065_74f706b2fd_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Towards the top of this lane is a left turn that leads to Serjeants Inn Courtyard, where the following image was taken.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7523/15893556922_121f9206af_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7523/15893556922_121f9206af_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Around the corner from here and heading towards Fleet Street is a tiny footpath called Hare Place. After wandering and wondering what to shoot for a few minutes, I plucked up the courage to speak to the girl below, before she finished her cigarette break and vanished. I told her about the project and she was more than happy for me to take her picture -if you are reading this, then I apologise that it has taken three weeks to post the image (the likelihood is that she got bored waiting for it to appear).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7509/15708446087_80afa54686_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7509/15708446087_80afa54686_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Since this was quite a productive outing with lots of images, I am splitting it up into two posts; the second to follow.<br />
<br />
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17891149751884249364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8280441262041978686.post-26873317490217449732014-12-14T22:00:00.000-08:002014-12-14T22:00:00.443-08:00More Between Cannon Street and BankI manage to fill in a few more streets on a quick afternoon walk (I rarely have a lunch break) and concentrated my time not to far from work, First up is Post Office Court - where the general post office was located from 1678 to 1829.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7494/15237797874_bfe5d92321_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7494/15237797874_bfe5d92321_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The following shot is of King William Street, which runs diagonally from Bank down to Monument, and should have lots of possibilities for an interesting shot. Unfortunately the best I managed was of a bus.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7461/15672566668_08b085256c_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7461/15672566668_08b085256c_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The next two streets are Abchurch Lane and Nicholas Lane, both I which I mentioned in my previous post, and which are parallel to each other and run from Lombard Street down to Cornhill. I'm quite pleased with the second image, which is of Nicholas Lane.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7469/15859453082_6396327355_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7469/15859453082_6396327355_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7570/15858095631_18e11ccc58_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7570/15858095631_18e11ccc58_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
As it was a quick break from the office I headed back towards work, but managed to shoot a couple more streets on the way, both of which were near Bank tube. The first was of Mansion House Place where I spotted this girl with matching outfit and suitcase next to some rather large plant pots.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7522/15834278106_dc9f3817b9_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7522/15834278106_dc9f3817b9_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The other and last image of my short walk was of Walbrook, on the other side of the Mansion House, and is of one of the entrances/exits to/from Bank Tube.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7541/15672742600_c7260c084a_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7541/15672742600_c7260c084a_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17891149751884249364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8280441262041978686.post-91339999727724168362014-12-14T13:01:00.001-08:002014-12-14T13:01:25.625-08:00Down by the river again, and elsewhereI may be brief with this entry as I am about 4 weeks behind and need to get a few posts out in quick succession perhaps. I began the week with another walk down to the river, starting just to the east of London Bridge at Old Waterman's Walk. This is a section of the Thames that can be prone to flooding and the markings on the pavement indicate the distance from the river.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7487/15598235070_a0b0909f57_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7487/15598235070_a0b0909f57_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The section between here and London Bridge is Grants' Quay Wharf and here I took a few half decent photos.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8642/15597887357_40105ecbce_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8642/15597887357_40105ecbce_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7574/15597888287_bcc42d0270_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7574/15597888287_bcc42d0270_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5612/15597228849_c52da27249_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5612/15597228849_c52da27249_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Continuing along the river but on the other side of London Bridge is Fishmonger's Hall Wharf. I must confess that at some point walking along the river I regretted a little, my decision to photograph anything with a street sign,since name changes frequently along this stretch of the Thames.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5603/15598238470_2bd561262d_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5603/15598238470_2bd561262d_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
This particular outing was a lunchtime walk, so at this point I had to start heading back to the office, but still had time to cover a few streets on the way back. Sherbone Lane is one of the streets between Cannon Street and King William Street and it seems to be entirely under construction and closed to vehicle, and at this time pedestrians too, so photographic opportunities were limited<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5612/15783043295_a9b189478a_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5612/15783043295_a9b189478a_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
A couple of streets away is Nicholas Passage which connect Nicholas Lane with Abchurch Lane.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8679/15781181591_76f13a856a_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8679/15781181591_76f13a856a_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The last photo of the day was closer to work and at Royal Exchange Avenue, which as the name suggests is close to the Royal Exchange building.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5611/15597635958_59d3406813_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5611/15597635958_59d3406813_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next morning a made a rare journey on the central line, getting off at Bank, and with a few minutes to spare managed to take a few shots. First was Cornhill.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7544/15601757510_e3e654056e_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7544/15601757510_e3e654056e_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Continuing up Cornhill and away from Bank, there are many little alleys to the side, some already photographed and some like Ball Court, still to be crossed off the list.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5608/15786581175_9545b8e25d_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5608/15786581175_9545b8e25d_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One other such alley on the other side of Cornhill is White Lion Court. There was not too much to photograph here, but rather appropriately there were two white lions at the entrance to one of the offices.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7570/15166636344_43b3ebffe2_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7570/15166636344_43b3ebffe2_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And then it was time for work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

This has been partly due to my PC dying, which was an expense I had not been planning for just before Christmas. Anway..<br />
<br />
This post is focused around a walk down to the river one afternoon during a quick work break; I dont really have lunch breaks, other than to pop out and get a sandwich, which I then eat at my desk, so I feel ok in doing this. I headed towards Monument and down Eastcheep where I spotted some workman standing outside a building that was being renovated. On the front of the building was a picture of some of cityscape, and the workmen in front of it seemed fitting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5603/15149487933_a784b189f9_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5603/15149487933_a784b189f9_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Walking towards the Tower the Tower, Eastcheep turns into Great Tower Street. The picture below was taken outside the Hung Drawn and Quartered pub, named (obviously) after the torturous acts performed at the Tower of London.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7550/15584102430_e20225dd70_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7550/15584102430_e20225dd70_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
At the side of the pub is small alley called Fowkes Buildings where I took the shot below; it seemed a better image at the time of taking.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I then headed to the river and onto Custom House Walkway. The picture below is taken from here, but is looking over to the Shard on the other side of the river.<br />

<br />
Continuing along the river the next two shots were taken on Old Billingsgate Walk and were the final shots of a short break from the office.<br />

I covered most of the streets in this visit to the area, but not all, so will be back.<br />
<br />
The first street that I photographed was more of an undercover alley, Plough Court, where apparently the poet Alexandra Pope was born in 1688.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7521/15742390825_754b43e05b_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7521/15742390825_754b43e05b_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
At the far end (as seen in the picture) is Lombard Street, and the following shot was taken outside the the St Edmund, King and Martyr church, yet another built by Sir Christopher Wren.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3938/15557225387_7754f72f6f_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3938/15557225387_7754f72f6f_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Almost opposite and heading back towards King William Street, is Clements Lane.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7557/15557228637_79e7bffb76_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7557/15557228637_79e7bffb76_z.jpg" /></a></div>
Further down Clements Lane lies Lombard Court which leads to Gracechurch Street.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7512/15556514479_c374bfb83c_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7512/15556514479_c374bfb83c_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
A bit further on and you come to the St, Clements Church, which claims (as the does a church by the same name in Westminster) to be that referenced in the nursery rhyme "Oranges and Lemon". Down the side of the Church is St. Clements Court, previously known as Church Court. Here there is a very small churchyard with a few tombs. According to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Clement%27s,_Eastcheap#.22Oranges_and_Lemons.22" target="_blank">this wiki page</a>, the poet John Milton was reconciled with his wife here in 1645. There were also a lot of what looked like old displays from a perfume store/department -perhaps from the House of Fraser round the corner.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3944/15556959438_e8129b5577_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3944/15556959438_e8129b5577_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The final couple of pictures are not within the the same areas as the above pictures, but taken on the same day. The first is of Finch Lane and was taken on my way back to the office from taking the above shot. It lies between Cornhill and Threadneedle street.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3947/15122981463_b9c4fa026f_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3947/15122981463_b9c4fa026f_z.jpg" /></a></div>
The second is of Gutter Lane, which near St. Paul's and just off Eastcheap. It had been taken in the morning on the way to work and probably should have been in the previous post. Appropriately, the shot was taken from within the gutter.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3937/15115457813_a6b9a8db98_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3937/15115457813_a6b9a8db98_z.jpg" /></a></div>

First up was Hosier Lane where I saw a more traditional cafe that will no doubt get turned into a Starbucks or something similar in a few years time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3949/15732919161_ef60c8894a_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3949/15732919161_ef60c8894a_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
This picture was taken on the junction with Giltspur Street and a little further along Giltspur Street on the junction with Cock Lane is where the Great fire of London stopped burning. It is commemorated by the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Boy_of_Pye_Corner" target="_blank">Golden Boy of Pye Corner statue</a>, but I photographed some roadworks instead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7522/15114888194_40f60a2505_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7522/15114888194_40f60a2505_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
From here I walked down to Holburn Viaduct where I was attracted to the steel girders in the picture below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8280/15734850005_db915ab585_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8280/15734850005_db915ab585_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Off of the viaduct and leading back up to Smithfield is Snow Hill. I struggled for inspiration here for a bit, and was a bit conscious that I might look a bit suspicious walking up and down with my camera in front of the City of London police station; I finally settled on a image of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barclays_Cycle_Hire" target="_blank">Boris' Bikes.</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7560/15115455023_a7b6e504aa_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7560/15115455023_a7b6e504aa_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I then headed off to Greyfriars passage. This is the location of the Christ Church Greyfriars which was destroyed by the Great fire, rebuilt by Wren, and then mostly destroyed again in second world war. The ruins are now a public garden. Next door is the Bank of America Merrill Lynch, formed after the acquisition of the latter by the former in the wake of the credit crunch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7550/15549396008_5e3904f008_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7550/15549396008_5e3904f008_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3951/15736393552_94eab6e826_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3951/15736393552_94eab6e826_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
By now it was time to head to the office and I had time for one more street, Gutter Lane, where I appropriately took a shot from the gutter.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
